Writing for Sight & Sound magazine, Quentin Tarantino He said it has become “almost impossible” for him to watch a new film without tearing up. He argued that “flaws, implausibilities, audience pandering, misrepresentation or just plain stupidity” often plague modern releases. The filmmakers went even further, calling Hollywood “Tasteless Sausage Factory” and saying that today’s film landscape creates more disappointment than excitement (via). Diversity).
Despite his criticism, Tarantino said that he has enjoyed some of the films in recent years. He specifically mentioned Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story and Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga Chapters One and Two. However, he said that none of them had fully recaptured the sense of wonder that once made films his favorite art form. “These days I like to read a book,” he wrote.
However, the celebrated director gave major praise to Netflix’s crime thriller The Rip, directed by Joe Carnahan, starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon in the lead roles. The story follows Miami-Dade officials who become entangled in a web of corruption involving $20 million in cartel cash. Tarantino was clearly impressed and praised the film from top to bottom.
The filmmaker liked the suspense, supported Carnahan’s direction, and also emphasized the cast and script. He wrote, “The film is a thrilling police thriller on a unique premise that manages to deliver the goods really cleverly.”
Away from filmmaking, Tarantino is currently developing a stage production titled The Poppin’ Cavalier, a farcical comedy set in 1930s Europe, scheduled to open in London’s West End in 2027.
